Champions Quiz

Prove your knowledge of players, teams and matches in the UEFA Champions League. You can start playing immediately: join the competition and play to try to win a top spot in the level rankings and be in the running for a series of great prizes. If you do not have a uefa.com registration yet, get one here for free.

If you are really, really good, you could play just once and get one of the top scores! Only your best score in the highest level counts towards one of the level rankings, and there's a Champions Quiz competition for every matchday of the current season. The top scores are reset after each matchday period, so make sure to come back and try again each matchday period. And don't forget to try to get into the daily top scores for bragging rights with your friends!

The quiz requires a vast knowledge of the ongoing Champions League, and is updated with the results and data of each match as the season moves forward. So, make sure to keep your knowledge up to date!

In the section below, you will find the details of the rules of the game:

Levels and ranks

The Champions Quiz has three levels. To advance from one level to the next, you must earn a minimum number of points in the regular round (points from bonus rounds do not count toward your ability to advance).

  • Level 1: no barrier to play
  • Level 2: you must earn 5,000 points or more in the Level 1 regular round
  • Level 3: you must earn 7,500 points or more in the Level 2 regular round

The highest level that you successfully complete is your "rank". Once you complete Level 2 or Level 3, you can choose to start a new game directly on that level.

Your rank is saved for the duration of the current matchday period (see "Matchday prizes" for the schedule). At the end of each period, your rank and your top scores are reset.

Regular and bonus rounds

Each level is composed of two rounds of questions: one regular and one bonus round. Regular rounds consist of ten questions each in which your points are simply added up. Bonus rounds are optional rounds of five questions played by "sudden death" rules: each question is worth double the points awarded in the regular rounds - but if you get one question wrong, you lose all your points and end the game!

Questions

The questions are multiple-choice: simply click on the right answer among the ones proposed. The questions themselves are very short and are illustrated by pictures (players, goals, stadiums, team logos...); the answers are usually text but can sometimes be pictures too - you will have to play to find out.

Hints

The Champions Quiz is fast-paced and time is of the essence. You have a time limit of ten seconds per question. If you're stuck, the question is made easier for you as time passes: first by giving you a hint (the name of the player in the picture, the name of the stadium, the team name...), then by greying out incorrect answers until you are left with just two choices.

Right answers

Answer the questions as fast as you can: the faster you answer correctly, the more points you win. As time passes (and the more hints you get), the question is worth less and less. If you give the right answer immediately, you earn 1,000 points (2,000 in bonus rounds). If you leave it to the last second, you only earn 100 points.

Wrong answers

Don't answer too fast, though: incorrect answers are penalized with negative points. If you get the answer wrong, the game will take away at least as many points as you would have won had you chosen the right answer!

So, do not click on random answers as fast as possible unless you want a really bad final score. Keep your cool! Wait for the hints, think calmly, and if you really don't know the answer maybe you should just wait for the ten seconds to elapse: better to gain no points than to lose points.

Bonus rounds

At the end each level, you are given the option of continuing to a bonus round. Think carefully about whether you want to risk all the points you've won up to that point: if you make one mistake, then you will lose the game. But get all five of those bonus questions right, and your score will shoot way, way up!

In a bonus round, right answers are worth double the points awarded during a regular round (bonus points start at 2,000 points). But you cannot skip a question - you have to answer them all. Failing to answer during a bonus round, or getting a question wrong, will end the game without letting you save your score.

Final score

The final score for the game is the sum of the points earned for each question in all rounds played.

Level rankings and daily top scores

There are two tables of the top scores: the daily top scores, with the highest scores during the last 24 hours; and the level rankings, which list the top scores in each of the three levels during the current matchday period.

The daily top scores are displayed for your pleasure only; no prizes are awarded on the basis of this listing. Players in the three level rankings are competing for prizes and ultimate glory.

There are three level rankings, which display the top scores for each level of the Champions Quiz. You only qualify to appear in one level ranking - the highest level that you have successfully completed during the current matchday period. Whether your name actually appears in a level ranking depends on how well your score compares to the scores of other players in the same level ranking.

The level rankings only last for one matchday period (see below for the schedule). After each matchday period, three winners are selected and then all the top scores are reset. There are no cumulative points: only the highest score from a single game qualifies a player to appear in the level rankings.

Your total game score is also displayed next to the level score for the same game. No prize is given for the highest total game score, but only the very best players get truly high total scores. Play to get the highest total game score to show your friends who is really the expert player.

Personal scores

You can view your personal top scores for the current matchday period at any time in the same section of the site as the level rankings. Track your performance over time, and try to beat your own best score!

Matchday Prizes

Each matchday competition runs for a period defined by the Wednesday morning of a Champions League matchday through the Tuesday evening of the following matchday (see below).

For each matchday competition, the top player from each of the three level rankings will win a Heineken Fan Kit. Please note that players are only eligible to win a total of one matchday prize in the duration of the Champions Quiz.

The matchday competitions run in the following periods:

  • Matchday 1: 19 September 2007 - 2 October 2007
  • Matchday 2: 3 October 2007 - 23 October 2007
  • Matchday 3: 24 October 2007 - 6 November 2007
  • Matchday 4: 7 November 2007 - 27 November 2007
  • Matchday 5: 28 November 2007 - 11 December 2007
  • Matchday 6: 12 December 2007 - 19 December 2007
  • Matchday 7: 20 February 2008 - 4 March 2008
  • Matchday 8: 5 March 2008 - 1 April 2008
  • Matchday 9: 2 April 2008 - 8 April 2008
  • Matchday 10: 9 April 2008 - 22 April 2008
  • Matchday 11: 23 April 2008 - 29 April 2008
  • Matchday 12: 30 April 2008 - 21 May 2008

Please note that the level rankings and daily top scores are updated with a slight delay.

The Champions Quiz will be playable and the top scores will be recorded for all periods, not just the matchday periods listed above. However, scores from these non-matchday periods will not count for any prize-awarding competition. This applies in particular to the winter hiatus between 19 December 2007 and 20 February 2008, the pre-season (before 19 September 2007) and post-season (after 21 May 2008).

Grand Prizes

The top ten players from each of the three level rankings will qualify for a draw for one of the grand prizes. The pool of qualifying players from Matchday 1 through Matchday 6 inclusive will be entered in the first grand prize drawing. The pool of qualifying players from Matchday 7 through Matchday 10 will be entered in the second grand prize draw.

One player will win the first grand prize for the Champions Quiz: two tickets, travel and accommodation for the UEFA Champions League final at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow on 21 May 2008.

For the second grand prize, Heineken will make it possible for passionate football fans to get a luxury look behind the scenes prior to UEFA Champions League matches. The Heineken Back-Stadium Pass Experience includes a VIP access all areas stadium tour and will culminate in the match that night, viewed from the best seats in the house. The player who wins the second grand prize will receive two BackStadium passes to a match during the 2008/09 UEFA Champions League season.

The first grand prize will be drawn at the end of the group phase from among the pool of 180 qualifying players from Matchday 1 through Matchday 6 inclusive.

The second grand prize will be drawn just before the semi-finals from among the pool of 120 qualifying players from Matchday 7 through Matchday 10 inclusive.

The winners of the Matchday 11 and Matchday 12 competitions will not be eligible to participate in a grand prize draw.

Only players residing in one of the 53 UEFA National Association countries are eligible to win the matchday and grand prizes.
